Overview

About

The Steel Technologies and Ferroalloys Department (STF) carries out basic and applied researches on steel and ferroalloys fields. Steel and ferroalloys department is the heritage of the ferrous metallurgy unit established in 1960 as a part of the National research center. This unit mainly deals with bench scale researches of iron and steel. The main aim of STF is to diminish the gab between industry and research and to apply the most recent researches in steel and ferroalloys industry which would directly enhance the product quality, lower power consumption, reduce production costs and limit the harmful emissions to the environment.

Research areas

The department performed research works in various areas such as;
 Developing of production technology of different steel production aggregates.
 Developing of Steel production aggregation according the most modern researches
 Developing and optimizing heat treatment processes of Steel
 Investigation new steel grades and introducing them in production lines
 Solving problems of steel production
 Utilization of local production of ferro alloys such as FeTi, FeCr, FeSiMg, etc.
 Energy saving during production of ferroalloys
 Utilization of Steel and other wastes for production of valuable materials (mill scales for production of steel, mazut ash for production of ferroalloys.

Goals

• Steel and ferroalloys technology department provides its services for the industrial sector, Universities, different organizations dealing with steel and ferroalloys, imports, and exports these services include:
• Determination of the chemical composition of ores, slags, steel, and ferroalloys by both chemical and physical methods on samples and insito
• Determination of mechanical properties of different Steel grades 8 low as when is high temperature including hardness and microstructure
• Microscopic examination of Steel for determination of its crystal structure
• Quantitative and qualitative determination and examination of non-metallic inclusions both for isolated one and in solid Steel samples
• Determination of phase transformation and thermal expansion of different Steel grades
• Defining Steel standard grades based on the different world standards
• Supply clients with specific Steels in the form of ingots as heat-treated cast.
• Heat treatment for special types of Steel
• The suggestion of alternatives to different Steel grades to obtain specific properties and feasibility studies for steel and for Ferroalloys projects.
