Pyrometallurgy is a branch of extractive metallurgy. It deals with the thermal treatment of minerals, metallurgical ores, concentrates and secondary resources to recover the valuable products such as metals. Examples of elements extracted by pyrometallurgical processes like iron, titanium zinc, silicon, magnesium, calcium, and manganese. Pyrometallurgical processes are generally grouped into Calcination, Roasting, Smelting, Reduction and Refining.
Pyrometallurgy Division carries out high-temperature research and process development for the production of a wide variety of primary products for industrial process in addition to solving related industrial problems. The division has experiences in different pyrometallurgical processes such as gaseous, carbothermic and metallothermic reduction, chlorination, smelting in electric arc furnace, roasting, and calcination processes. There is also substantial expertise in thermodynamics and kinetics studies for different pyrometallurgical processes.
The Department aims for cooperative research for better development of pyro-metallurgical processing of minerals and secondary resources.
