Composite Materials Department

About

The Composite materials Department (CMD)
Carries out basic and applied researches on Metallic and Polymer composite materials. It was established in 2003 after reorganization of CMRDI divisions. The mission of CMD is to Development, fabrication and evaluation of the structures, physical, mechanical and tribological properties of the composites including Metal Matrix Composites, Metal Matrix Nanocomposites, Syntactic Composite Foams, Composite Foams, Amorphous Matrix Composite, Polymer Matrix Composites, and Polymer Matrix Nanocomposites. Moreover, conducting training courses about the technology developed for junior scientists, university students and engineers from industry. Furthermore, Publishing of technical papers in international journals and conference in the field of composites. Finally, Providing consulting services.

Research Areas

The department performed research works in various areas such as;

 Cast Metal Matrix Composites
 Nanocomposites
 Syntactic Composite Foams
 Composite Foams
 Polymer Matrix Composite
 Automotive & aerospace applications
 Simulation & molding
 Energy storage Materials

Goals

 Development novel composites with higher performance, longer life and lighter weight with regard to the presently used materials.
 Replacing conventional materials by composites to accomplish weight reduction, saving in fuel consumption, higher performance and lower cost with improved lifetime
 Development of structure-property relationships of the composites, including the effect of matrix, reinforcement and processing parameters on the structures, mechanical and tribological properties of the composites.
 Understanding of physical, mechanical and electrochemical properties of the developed composites.
 Transferring the process technology developed for manufacturing of the composites to companies to improve the well¬being of the Egyptian people and develop the scientific resources.
 Enhancing the scientific infrastructure resources in composite Division.
